Key Data & Description

NAME: Yttrium
SYMBOL: Y
ATOMIC NUMBER: 39
ATOMIC WEIGHT: 88.90585
GROUP NUMBER: 3
STANDARD STATE: Solid at 298K
COLOR: Silvery white

Yttrium has a silvery-metallic lustre. Yttrium turnings ignite in air. Found in most rare-earth minerals. Moon rocks contain Yttrium.The electron configuration is 2-8-18-9-2. Yttrium has no biological role,but it does have a geological role. It can be a solid or become a metal, but we usually leave it as itself(crystal) or into a powdery substance. Yttrium's crystallography is a hexagonal structure. Its maximum diagram is 1 to 5 inches, thickness 0 to 5 mm, and mirror-like, scratch free at magnification 200x.

History
Founded by Jhoan Gadolin in 1794. Source of the name Yttrium was from the village of "Ytterby" in Sweden.In 1843, Mosander showed that Yttrium could be resolved into the oxides of three elements. The name Yttria was reserved for the most basic one, the others were named Erbia and Terbia. Natural Yttrium contains but one isotope (89 Y).

Uses
* The red color in television screens
* Microwave filters
* Transmitter and tranducer of acoustic energy
